The cat, name is Amber, for this story is called Kat to make a fit with Kit. Over her life of a mere four years, cat has had a lot of experiences even though she is an indoor cat and has spent only five of her nine lives.
In her early years she had not yet developed her true nocturnal habit, so she slept part of the night and daytime. Now, she is asleep most of the day and awake and prowling most of the night. On the few occasions of prowling during the day, she still checks out the closet where she last saw the mouse (described in an earlier post) to see if the little creature had not really left so abruptly.
But the night time is when it all action takes place outdoors so she is now a converted nocturnal animal, spending most daylight hours napping and most dark hours checking the glass windows next to the front door to see who is visiting the bird feeder and the water trough. Nose prints on the inside and outside of the glass reveals that a lot is going on at night while we are asleep. We think her favorite night time visitor is the raccoon. The raccoon comes to the glass to look in and then tries to determine who it is that is on the other side of the glass.
However, there is ample action during the hours of daylight just before darkness settles in to make it imperative that she naps with one eye partially open and her ears alert to unusual sounds coming from outside. Deer still are not comfortable with seeing her face at the glass and will stomp their front foot to get some reaction from the cat, but cat is bored by them and has no comparable response.
But, the other day was a banner day for her. A gray fox showed up to get a drink of water at the bird bath and along with mother fox was her kit. After few minutes, mother fox sat on the walkway while the kit explored the area and then found the glass with this strange creature on the other side of the glass with this cat-swallowed-the-canary grin. The cat was cautious with the sight of the kit, but the kit was anxious to make friends and so danced around near the glass. Quickly, we grabbed the camera and captured the whole episode in a video. What luck. Go to the link below and take a look.
It is apparent that when mother fox said "lets move on", that got kit's attention and off they went. We haven't seen them since and we hope they are both doing well. Gray foxes are not protected and "who knows what evil lurks?" Who said that phrase? Let me know and if I think its the right answer I will send you some tatume seeds as a reward.
